HOUSTON AND HATFIELD HAVE BIG PERFORMANCES AT MISSOURI VALLEY OPEN

MARSHALL, Mo. – Putting up one of its best performances of the early season, Avila women's wrestling ended the historic two-day Missouri Valley Open with a handful of strong showings from all over the mat.

As an open tournament, the brackets throughout the competition were filled with Olympians as well as wrestlers from nearly every level of college athletics

Audrina Houston had the best performance of her college career as the freshman recorded her first collegiate win and first pin on Friday. She finished the competition with three total wins in the 110-pound division – two of which coming against NCAA competition.

As has been the case throughout the season, Alexis Hatfield had another strong showing in mid-Missouri over the weekend. In her first season of collegiate competition after a two-year retirement, Hatfield had two wins of her own, but would fall to the eventual 103-pound champion as her weekend came to an end.

Markayla Lottie went 2-2 in her four matches and Susana Mondragon notched two wins of her own, while Sara Souresjhani ended the weekend 1-2.

Still in its early stages as a program, Avila women's wrestling is making tremendous strides early in its third season. The Eagles had five wrestlers qualify for the final rounds of Day One, with Hatfield and Houston qualifying for day two competition.

You can expect Avila representation in the NAIA's next set of women's wrestling rankings, coming out in just under three weeks. As a team, the Eagles were receiving votes in the NAIA's recent rankings.
