Lottie Leads Avila’s Efforts at Doane Open

CRETE, Neb. – Markayla Lottie led the pack with three total wins at a sixth-place finish, highlighting Avila women's wrestling's trip to Nebraska for Doane's Conner/Oppenheim Open on Saturday.

In the midst of the start of a hectic end to the fall semester, Avila sent a small crew of four deserving wrestlers to compete in Doane's December event. Avila had representatives in four different weight classes in an event that featured many combatants from across the KCAC especially.

As she has often done in her two-and-a-half years as a wrestler at Avila, Markayla Lottie led the way for the Eagles and had the team's best overall showing. Lottie won her first two matches of the day, pinning Loralei Wydra of hosts Doane in less than 90 seconds and shutting out Ranie Paulin of Baker in a 10-0 tech fall to advance all the way to the semifinal round. She ran into a tough, familiar face there in William Penn's Catherine Steinkamp and then dropped her next match, but recovered to defeat Mayangelie Colon of Grand View in a 17-6 slugfest to finish in 6th place in the 116 bracket.

Elsewhere, Dav'Yona Beatty pinned Waldorf's Ariel Brezendine-Weeks at 123 and Jaclyn Riedinger earned a 10-0 tech over Wartburg's Hadley Boshart. Jordyn Smith was also in action for the Eagles at 109 in her first open event of the season.

Up next, Avila women's wrestling will return home to Mabee Fieldhouse for their second straight home KCAC dual doubleheader, this time against Saint Mary. The Avila women kick off the doubleheader at 7 PM with the men to follow at 8; as always, you can watch all the action on the Avila Sports Network with James Russell on the call from Kansas City.
