CLOSE FIRST SET NOT ENOUGH AS WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL LOSES KCAC OPENER TO EVANGEL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila women's volleyball was unable to take the momentum from holding a first-set set point on Wednesday against Evangel, losing to the Valor, 3-0 at Mabee Fieldhouse.

Avila came out of the gates hot against the Valor, with both teams trading the lead back-and-forth with neither program leading by more than three in the opening set.

Trailing 20-16 late in the opening frame, the Eagles went on an 8-3 run thanks to attack errors from the Valor, to take a 24-22 lead and hold set point against Evangel, who were riding a 10-game winning streak.

Avila was unable to secure the opening-set victory, as Evangel wrapped up the frame on a 4-0 run, winning 26-24.

The Valor took the final two sets, 25-13 and 25-16 to wrap up the match.

From the serving position, Megan Davies picked up three service aces for the Eagles while Sophia Giorgio (15) and Sydney Owens (10) recorded double-digit digs for Avila.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday at York before returning to the area to face off with Ottawa on October 1.
