TOUGH, FIVE-SET LOSS IN FINAL ROAD NONCON GAME FOR WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
LAWRENCE, Kan. – A tight, back-and-forth, five-set match with Haskell on Wednesday night ended with a heartbreaking loss for Avila women's volleyball in its final road nonconference match of 2025, 14-25, 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 6-15.
Haskell easily picked up the first set before Avila came back to win sets two and three.
In set No. 2, Avila trailed midway through the set, 15-17, before rattling off 10 of the next 14 points to pick up the first set of the evening, capped by an Emerson Sweet kill.
Set three saw Avila drop the first point, but would not trail the rest of the set, picking up a 25-17 win, including ending the frame on a 6-1 run capped by another kill from Sweet, the second-consecutive set-ending kill from the freshman.
The fourth set is where the match turned and momentum shifted to the home team. The Eagles held a 23-19 lead and nearly wrapped up the match, but three-straight errors from Avila set up Haskell to end the set on a 6-0 run, capture the set and force a decisive fifth set.
Haskell controlled the fifth set, winning 15-6, including leading 10-1 at one point.
Avila is back on home court this weekend for the first of four-straight matches at Mabee Fieldhouse. The Eagles take on Baker at 5 PM on Friday and Culver-Stockton at 4:30 on Saturday afternoon.
