Eagles Defeated by Moundbuilders

WINFIELD, Kan. – Southwestern struck for a pair of goals in each half and Avila was never able to break through on the other end, leading the Moundbuilders (4-5-2, 3-2-1 KCAC) to a comfortable 4-0 win over the Eagles (4-8-0, 4-3-0 KCAC) on Wednesday evening in Winfield.

No team in the KCAC had been able to solve Olivia Seston this season – the sophomore netminder had earned clean sheets in each of her first three conference starts in her first season in the league – but Southwestern ended that streak by scoring a pair of goals in each half.

Avila had the first chances of the game with Nakita Wood and Megan Nugent generating shot opportunities in the first five minutes of the match, but both of those bids went wide. Seston made her first save of the night in the 16th minute but Southwestern's Lillian Grisso scored on the ensuing corner kick to open the scoring, and even though Avila developed an immediate response through Samantha Mendez, veteran Moundbuilder goalie Mallorie Lund was there for the save to keep Avila off the board.

And that was something she continued to do for the rest of the game. Lund made five saves off five different Eagles to preserve the shutout, and four different Builders scored on the other end to make the difference. A late red card after Southwestern's fourth goal doomed any chances of a late Avila rally of any kind, and Southwestern earned a 4-0 win at home.

Up next, Avila returns home to Kansas City to face conference rivals Kansas Wesleyan this Saturday, October 7 at The Z. Women's soccer kicks off the doubleheader at noon with the men to follow around 2:30; as always, admission to the games is free, and you can watch all the action live and for free on the Avila Sports Network with Tim Hackett on the call from Kansas City.
