Eagles Shut Out in St. Louis
St. LOUIS, Mo. - Three different first-half goal scorers combined to put the home team in front early, and that was all the separation Harris-Stowe (1-0) needed in a 3-0 victory over Avila (0-2) on Saturday morning in St. Louis.
The latest installment of Eagles vs. Hornets was bumped up to a 10 AM kickoff to avoid the impending triple-digit temperatures slated to swelter Kansas and Missouri over the weekend. That heat certainly arrived, but unfortunately for the Eagles, the offense remained ice cold: Avila was unable to score in either of its first two games of the 2023 campaign this weekend.
The Hornets did their best to avoid a similar fate, scoring less than five minutes into their season opener through Katharina Salomon. About 20 minutes later, Emily Roos doubled the lead, and about ten minutes after that, Yasmina Dressen, one of the Hornets' top returning attacking options, made it 3-0.
Olivia Seston got the start in goal after playing the second half on Saturday night against Culver-Stockton and fared better than the stats indicate – she was credited with only one save but still kept the Eagles in shape despite the three goals allowed. Kenan Ebel then entered to play the second half, swapping roles with Seston from the previous game, and was excellent, stopping all five shots she faced, including a few stops from distance. Megan Nugent keyed the Eagles' offense with four shots, two on goal, but HSSU goalkeeper Saga Stralman stopped all four shots she faced to earn the shutout in her collegiate debut.
Up next, the Eagles will return home to Kansas City for their first game at The Zarda Family Multisport Complex this season. That's coming up this Saturday, August 26, at 11 AM against Dordt. All home games will be streamed live on the Avila Sports Network, and admission to soccer games at The Z is always free.
