Avila Drops First Road Contest of 2022 Season

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Baker struck for two goals in the first half and added three more in the second, and that was more than enough to power the Wildcats (2-0) past the Eagles (0-2-1) on Sunday evening in Baldwin City in the first road game of the 2022 season for Avila women's soccer.

Baker got on the board inside of three minutes into the contest when Emma Schieber got past the defense and placed her shot past Kenan Ebel. Unfortunately for the Eagles, that was just the start of things to come. Avila had defended Baker corner kicks fairly well in the first half, but the Wildcats finally broke through off a set piece on a goal by Stella Jameson at the half-hour mark to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

After Baker very nearly extended its lead but hit the crossbar twice on consecutive shots, the Eagles finally had their chance in the attacking end. Kirryn Killingsworth forced a save out of Taylor Evans and then sent the ball in on the ensuing corner, but Hailey Englund's bid sailed high.

That kept the Eagles off the board with about 20 minutes to play, and not long after that the Wildcats put the game out of reach for good, scoring a pair of goals in less than three minutes to go up 4-0. Melissa Siegel added a penalty kick goal with ten minutes left, putting the exclamation point on a 5-0 win for the Wildcats.

Morgan Pettlon and Sahree Eng were the other Eagles to attempt shots in the second half. Ebel finished with seven saves, bringing her season total up to 17, a Top 15 mark in the NAIA, through just three games.

Avila women's soccer will have some time off before their next scheduled game, which as of now is planned for Wednesday, September 7 against a ranked Benedictine squad at The Z. Kickoff is slated for 5 PM; as always, you can watch all the action on the Avila Sports Network.
