Baldwin's Big Day Not Enough against Kansas Wesleyan
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Emily Baldwin turned in one of her best games as an Eagle, dropping a season-high 24 points, but it was not enough for Avila women's basketball (1-8, 1-4 KCAC) against Kansas Wesleyan (3-5, 3-1 KCAC) in an 87-46 victory for the Coyotes in Mabee Fieldhouse on Thursday night.
This was simply one of those games where everything went right for the visitors. The Coyotes were more efficient from the field and from beyond the arc, committed fewer turnovers, and were stronger than the Eagles in the paint. Kansas Wesleyan got off to a flying start while Avila scuffled out of the gate, and that was enough to set the tone in an eventual victory for the visitors.
The Coyotes scored the first 11 points of the game, shutting out the Eagles until Kayla Navy finally got the Eagles on the board with about 3:29 left in the first quarter. As they have all season so far, the Eagles had surges and bright spots, but never were able to mount a comeback. Kansas Wesleyan led by 13 after the first quarter and expanded on that lead in every period.
Baldwin was the biggest bright spot for the Eagles, driving the offense, scoring in different ways, and delivering on her opportunities. She led all players with a season-high 24 points, including 16 after halftime. She made 50% of her field goal attempts, and went 10-of-12 from the foul line. Grace Effertz also had probably her best game as an Eagle, knocking down a pair of threes to score a total of eight points. London Foster had eight rebounds and five assists. Tylieea Wallace led KWU with 18 points, and LaMyah Ricks had 16.
Avila women's basketball will have a very quick turnaround before their next game, which comes up on Saturday, December 3 in Lawrence, Kansas against Haskell Indian Nations. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 PM; check out avilaathletics.com and Avila Athletics on social media for ways to watch and follow along.
