Avila Bested By Benedictine

ATCHISON, Kan. – The Avila women's basketball team made the short trip north to Atchison to take on Benedictine, one of two matches on Saturday's Benedictine Classic which also featured Baker and Sterling. There, the (RV) Ravens (2-2) took care of business, dispatching the Eagles (0-4) 84-44 on Saturday afternoon.

Avila picked up a statement win at the start of what became an excellent campaign last year, but the Ravens have firm control of this all-time program series and got back on the winning track with the win Saturday. Benedictine scored the first ten points of the game, prompting an Avila timeout two minutes in to the contest. Hannah Smith hit a three-pointer right after that to kickstart the Eagle offense and both Kayla Navy and Emily Baldwin hit a pair of shots late in the first quarter to get the Eagles back within ten points, 23-13, after ten minutes.

They would get no closer. Avila outscored Benedictine 15-12 in the fourth quarter but by then the damage had been done. The Ravens shot better than 50% from the floor in the game, were better in the passing game, and had the edge in points off turnovers and points in the paint.

Riley Boggs led the Eagles with 12 points in 25 minutes off the bench, and Kaytee Frasher turned in a nice all-around game with three points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Josie Weishaar led the pack for Benedictine with 23 points on five made threes along with eight boards and four assists.

Up next, Avila women's basketball returns home for its first KCAC contest inside Mabee Fieldhouse this season. The Avila men will also be on hand for what will be their home and home conference opener this Wednesday, November 16, against McPherson. The Avila women will get things started at 6 PM with the men to follow at 8. Admission is priced at $8 for visiting fans, and is free for Avila fans; as always, you can watch the games live on the Avila Sports Network with Joe Van Amburg and Jacob Kruckenberg on the call from Mabee Fieldhouse.
