MEN’S WRESTLING WRAPS UP SEASON AT NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

PARK CITY, Kan. – Avila men's wrestling wrapped up another successful season on Friday at the NAIA Men's Wrestling Championship, highlighted by a win from Rodney Trotter Jr.

Avila had three national qualifiers – Tyler Johnson, Trotter and Jeremiah Voliva – after each had a successful showing at the KCAC Championships in February.

All three Eagle wrestlers faced tough draws, but using their past successes, all three fared admirably in their first-round matchups.

Trotter opened the national competition facing the seven-seeded Trenton Bloomquist from Embry-Riddle. A tech fall loss sent Trotter to a match versus David Rapp of Simpson. Trotter vindicated himself with a 16-10 decision victory to give him a third match. Another tough matchup for Trotter awaited as he faced the ninth-seeded Kasten Grape of Southeastern, where he lost via tech fall.

Johnson competed hard in both of his matches in Park City, opening his weekend with a major decision loss and ended with a fall in his second match.

Voliva, competing in his second National Championship, battled tough in two losses via fall in the competition, opening his week facing 11-seeded Austen Wetzel of William Woods and wrapping up the day facing Griffin Ray of Central Methodist.

With three national qualifiers for just the second time in program history, Avila men's wrestling continues to grow and elevate the program. Head Coach Eric Mateo will begin his fourth season in charge in 2026-27 with an outstanding foundation in the rapidly-growing program.
