MEN’S WRESTLING CONTINUES TO BUILD IN DUAL WITH NO. 16 ST. MARY

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila men's wrestling competed in its first home event of the 2025-26 campaign and battled tough with No. 16 Saint Mary on Thursday night, losing to the Spires, 32-19.

Avila faced three nationally-ranked opponents in the dual, but still picked up four quality wins – including a pair of pins.

In the 125-pound weight class, redshirt junior Raul Romero got the night started with a pin in 2:50 to get the Mabee Fieldhouse crowd on its feet.

Two bouts later, Tyler Johnson notched a major decision (16-4) victory in the 141-pound weight class.

The Spires would go on a bit of a run, but the Eagles finished the night with wins in two of the final three matches.

At 184, Caleb Sharpe notched Avila's second pin of the night, taking down his opponent in 3:13.

Rounding out the dual, Gavin Howes – at 285 – won via a 3-2 decision to wrap up the night.

Avila will next head to Gatlinburg, Tenn., for the Rock Top Duals on Dec. 13 beginning at 10 AM CT.
