PLENTY OF POSITIVES FOR MEN’S WRESTLING AT MISSOURI VALLEY INVITE
MARSHALL, Mo. – Avila men's wrestling completed a two-day competition at the Missouri Valley Invite on Friday and Saturday, with positives to take back to Kansas City.
Avila's lone three-match winner was Gavin Howes in the 285-pound class. Howes secured 5.5 points for Avila with a 7-2 win over No. 16 Ethan Deroche of Providence (Mont.) and then had a major-decision 13-3 victory against Tanner Hennings of Dakota Wesleyan. Howes' third victory came via fall against Noah Winder of Southeastern in 5:13.
Logan Johnson – a recent KCAC Men's Wrestler of the Week – finished 2-2 on the weekend. Johnson won by fall twice – first over Ottawa's Cale Hein in 1:46 and followed that up with a 4:25 fall victory over Joseph Triscornia of Baker. Johnson's two victories picked up six points for Avila.
In the 184-pound division, Jeremiah Voliva also went 2-2 on the weekend. Voliva won by 5-4 decision against Eli Messick of Baker and then by a 2:35 fall over Brandon Rau from Siena Heights. Voliva secured four team points for the Eagles.
Terrell Carter-Williams picked up a 7-5 victory against Romeo White from Marian University. Jace Tapia joined Carter-Williams in the win column as he secured a victory over Brandon Harris of Briar Cliff via 4-3 decision.
Joe Juitt recorded a fall in 6:53 over Malankov Daceus from Brewton-Parker. Juitt faced tough competition in his other matches, losing to No. 15 Joel Campbell via tech fall.
In the 197-pound class, Blake Becker went 2-2 over the weekend, securing a win via major decision (21-8) over Jovon Howe of Cumberlands. Becker also would match up against the NAIA's No. 12 and 14 wrestlers in his two losses.
Avila will host its last home match of the 2024-25 season on Thursday at Mabee Fieldhouse against Bethany at 6 PM.
