KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The attacking presence of McPherson was too much for Avila men's soccer on Sunday, as the Bulldogs took down the Eagles, 3-1.
Celebrating senior day, Avila started seven of its seniors, and subbed in an eighth at halftime.
Avila recorded a gift of a goal in the 20th minute as River Howard stole the ball from the feet of the McPherson keeper and found the back of the net to give Avila a 1-0 lead.
McPherson answered back 20 minutes later with a free kick from 30 yards out. After bouncing off the bodies of a few Eagle players, the ball slipped past Brandon Keens to knot the game up at 1-1.
Barely a minute into the second half, McPherson added a second goal – this time in transition – to take the lead.
The Bulldogs added a third in the 54th minute, taking advantage of the wet conditions in south Kansas City. After a bad bounce, the McPherson attacker shot the ball past Harrison Ennis to stretch the lead to 3-1.
McPherson outshot Avila, 20-7 in the contest and had nine corner kicks to Avila's five, helping finalize the 3-1 scoreline.
With two games remaining on the schedule, Avila will look to end the season on a good note as they host Oklahoma Wesleyan on Wednesday at 2:30.
