KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Hitting the on-campus pitch for the first time this season, Avila men's soccer was unable to pull out a victory in its penultimate nonconference matchup, losing to Oklahoma Panhandle State on Wednesday, 2-1.
A chippy match, with 26 fouls called on top of six total yellow cards issued, it was tough for either team to produce much of a rhythm.
OPSU struck first in the opening five minutes, marking the only goal of the first half.
Early in the second period, Thomas Sweet was taken down inside the Aggie box, drawing a penalty shot opportunity.
Senior Malcolm Goswell stepped to the spot and made the most of his opportunity, burying the ball past the keeper's right hand to equalize the contest.
The joy on the Eagle sideline did not last long, as five minutes later, OPSU was awarded a penalty of its own. The Aggies converted the try and held on for the remainder of the match, handing Avila a 2-1 loss.
Avila will be back in action this Saturday, taking on Kansas Christian at 1 PM at The Z.
