BJ BOYD NAMED KCAC MEN’S BASKETBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On the heels of two huge conference wins, Avila forward BJ Boyd has been named the KCAC Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
“BJ has been a great spark for our team this second semester,” said head coach Tyler Bredehoeft. “As a freshman, he is finding different ways to help the team win. This past week he was for us in both of our wins.”
In Avila’s 86-70 win over Ottawa on Wednesday, the freshman from Olathe had a steal and a blocked shot and followed that up with a huge performance on Saturday versus Bethel, recording a career-high four steals in the Eagles 81-75 victory over the Threshers, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA men’s basketball rankings.
In addition to his five steals and block, Boyd pulled down eight defensive rebounds in the wins this week.
Boyd had started each of Avila’s last five games and has recorded at least one block or steal in 12 of his 23 games played.
Today’s announcement marks the second time an Avila player has won a conference award this season, after Gio Mack won Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 17-23.
With two regular season home games remaining, Boyd and the Eagles will host St. Mary on Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
