KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila baseball had one of its best offensive days in program history in a doubleheader sweep of Missouri Valley on Tuesday afternoon, winning 20-6 and 11-4.
In the first game, Avila only scored in three innings, but each inning was a big one.
The Eagles trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third when Diego Solis and Isaiah Ramos each had RBI base hits and JJ Dain brought a run in with a sacrifice fly. The highlight of the inning was a three-run shot from Caden Stillwell.
After three, Avila led 6-1.
The Vikings trailed 6-5 entering the bottom of the fifth inning when the Eagles opened the floodgates.
An RBI double from Dylan Atherton, an RBI single off the bat of JJ Stubblefield, two wild pitches and an error gave Avila an 11-5 lead still with only one out.
The inning ended with back-to-back home runs from Caden Stillwell (three-run HR) and Joey Reichmuth to put Avila ahead 15-5.
Avila got five more runs in the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI single from Reichmuth.
Stillwell's six RBI led all players and he was joined with multiple RBI from Reichmuth and Will Clark to finalize the 20-6 scoreline.
The top four batters in Avila's lineup scored 12 runs and drove in nine.
Avila's 21 runs scored are its highest total since March 9, 2021.
The second end of the doubleheader was another offensive power output for Avila.
Avila scored a run in five of its six innings at bat, capped by a two-run home run from Dylan Atherton in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Only three Eagles recorded hits in the game – Tommy English, Atherton and Aaron Mcleod-Smith with two each – as the Eagles scored on a wild pitch, an error, two bases loaded walks, a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout to precede Atherton's longball to right field.
Avila's 31 total runs are its most in a single day in the last six seasons.
The Eagles scored 31 runs on 21 hits with 11 different players scoring at least one run and 10 different players drove in at least one run.
Avila will look to continue their solid offense this weekend with three games at Friends beginning with a single game on Friday at 4 PM.
